Permit of Stay for Study Purposes – Non-EU Students

As a Non-EU student in Italy, you must apply for a Permit of Stay (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 working days of arrival if your stay exceeds 90 days. This process is essential to legalize your stay and is issued by the Questura (Police Headquarters).

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Obtain the Application Kit

  - During your university’s orientation, you’ll receive a kit for your residence permit application. If you arrive during university closure, you can collect the KIT from a designated Sportello Amico Post Office. See the list of post offices below.

2. Prepare Required Documents

  - Photocopies of your:

   - Passport (personal data page)

   - Visa and entry stamp

   - University admission letter stamped by the Italian Consulate

   - Health insurance policy (in English or Italian) valid for your entire stay in Italy and the Schengen area

  - Payment of fees:

   - €16 revenue stamp

   - €70.46 permit application fee

   - €30 for postage and handling

3. Submit the Application

  - Send the KIT from the Sportello Amico Post Office. After submission, you’ll receive:

   - A receipt (Assicurata)

   - An appointment date and time at your local Police Station (Commissariato).

4. Attend the Police Appointment

  - On your appointment day, bring all original documents along with:

   - 2 passport-sized photos

   - An Italian mobile number (to receive updates)

  - Your documents will be reviewed, and fingerprints will be taken.

5. Permit Collection

  - Within 4 to 8 weeks, you will receive an SMS from the Police notifying you to collect your Permit of Stay Card. It will usually be collected from the same Police Station where you attended your appointment.
